Byron Bay
Byron Bay water sports on this page come down to three things: standing up on a surfboard, paddling a sea kayak among dolphins, or snorkelling with turtles and rays. Each has more than one version, split by beach, departure point and how much swimming you'll be doing.
The Byron Bay 2 Hour Group Surf Lesson is held at Main Beach, in classes of up to six surfers per instructor, with all equipment provided and no swimming ability required. Lessons run daily from 9am to 5pm, with longer hours from December to February.
The 2 Hour Group Surf Lesson in Lennox Heads teaches paddling, catching waves and standing at Lennox Head, south of Byron Bay, at 9.30am. It's a self-drive meeting point. Both lessons are two hours and both start from the basics.
Blue Seafaris runs two small-group snorkel tours with a marine biologist guide, and mask, snorkel, fins and wetsuit are included. The Byron Bay Snorkel at Julian Rocks departs from Brunswick Heads Boat Harbour, 15 minutes north of Byron Bay, and visits the marine sanctuary off the country's most easterly point. Turtles, manta and eagle rays and leopard sharks are the main sightings, plus humpback whales in winter.
The Tweed Heads Snorkel With Turtles tour covers Cook Island, leaving from a public jetty at Tweed Heads South five minutes from Coolangatta. It asks for reasonable fitness and the ability to swim 200 metres. Arrive 15 minutes early for the Julian Rocks tour, which leaves on NSW time and won't wait.
The Byron Bay Dolphin Kayaking Tour departs from Lawson Street and takes around 2.5 hours. You paddle out through the surf into Cape Byron Marine Park, looking for bottlenose dolphins and sea turtles, with humpback whales added in season. Safety gear, wetsuits and photos are included, and it finishes with Tim Tams. It needs a moderate level of fitness, and it's an open ocean tour, so swimming confidence matters.
Comfortable in the water but new to surfing? Take a surf lesson. Happy to be in it all day, with a mask on? Snorkel Julian Rocks. Prefer to stay mostly dry but keep moving? Paddle the dolphin kayak tour. For land-based options too, see Byron Bay activities, or look at Byron Bay whale watching between May and November.
The Byron Bay 2 Hour Group Surf Lesson lists no swimming ability required. The Tweed Heads Snorkel With Turtles tour needs you to swim 200 metres, and the Byron Bay Dolphin Kayaking Tour runs in open ocean, so confidence in the water is expected.
The Byron Bay Snorkel at Julian Rocks departs from Brunswick Heads Boat Harbour, about 15 minutes north of Byron Bay. Arrive 15 minutes before departure, as the operator does not wait for late arrivals.
Yes. The Julian Rocks and Cook Island snorkel tours include a mask, snorkel, fins and wetsuit, and each tour is guided by a marine biologist.
