Discover Attractions

Byron Bay attractions on this page are two days out in the hinterland and the Tweed Valley: Crystal Castle, home to a collection of giant crystals and subtropical gardens, and Tropical Fruit World, a plantation with a tractor safari, a boat cruise and fruit tastings. Both are ticketed entry, and each fills most of a morning or afternoon.

Crystal Castle and Shambhala Gardens

Crystal Castle Byron Bay sits in the Byron Bay hinterland and holds what it describes as the world's largest collection of giant crystals. Stand between the 5.5-metre Crystal Guardians, sit inside the Dragon Egg, a 120-million-year-old amethyst cave, and walk through the 20-tonne Enchanted Cave.

Admission also covers Shambhala Gardens, the World Peace Stupa blessed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, a half-kilometre Crystal Labyrinth walk, a guided tour on crystals and the castle's history, and a children's playground with a crystal dragon. Sessions include a Crystal Sound Bath with singing bowls in the geodesic Peace Dome, twice daily, plus a daily Crystal Meditation and a morning guided garden tour. Allow around five hours, and wear comfortable walking shoes.

Tropical Fruit World in the Tweed Valley

Tropical Fruit World grows more than 500 varieties of fruit in the Tweed Valley, including the chocolate pudding fruit, chewing gum tree and lemon meringue fruit. Admission includes a guided plantation tractor tour, a wildlife boat cruise, a fruit tasting session, an animal park and an island recreation area. Also on site are putt putt golf, a flying fox, koi, bird feeding, kangaroos and orchard discovery walks.

Admission includes the cafe and market areas. It opens daily from 10am to 4pm and closes on Christmas Day. Plan about two hours, bring a hat, enclosed shoes and a rain jacket, and take a little cash for the fruit stalls.

Choosing between the two

Pick Crystal Castle for gardens, quiet and the sound bath, and Tropical Fruit World for something hands-on with a tractor ride and animals. For rainforest after dark, the Glow Worms, Waterfalls and Rainforest Experience sits under Byron Bay tours, and Byron Bay activities covers the rest.
